7 of 7 people found the following review helpful Outshines my penn senator and daiwa saltist, January 5, 2012 This review is from: Penn Fathom Star Drag Conventional Baitcast Reel (Sports) I've owned the Penn Senator 113H for many years and the Daiwa Saltist 30H for 2 years now. I love both reels and while they are not perfect, they both have their own strengths that's well worth the $175 I paid for them. I like the line capacity/cranking power of the Senator and the high speed retrieve/weight of the Saltist. I have 2 boys now big enough to share the reels when we go out so I researched long and hard to find the best priced reel that I can use for the next 10 years. I decided to get the Fathom FTH25N for casting and FTH40LW for bottom fishing. Got it before Christmas and used them both 3 times already on Party boats. The 25N is non level wind and narrow, requires very little effort in guiding the line on retrieve. I spooled it with #65 spectra and topshot with #25 sufix mono. It consistently throws bait farther than my Penn Slammer spinning reel. The cranking power of the 40LW was unbelievable. Used it on 12/31 aboard the speed twin fishing for red snapper at... Read more
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful penn fathom star drag review, January 17, 2012 This review is from: Penn Fathom Star Drag Conventional Baitcast Reel (Sports) Purchashed this reel for striper fishing this past fall but will also use it for all types of bottom fishing. It is a solid powerful reel with a very smooth drag system. It also has a very big drag range which allows you to make micro adjustments for fine tuning pressure when fighting fish. I own many other star drag reels from all the top manufactuers and it finally seems that penn has stepped things up to challange the foriegn competitors. In my opinion this reel line is now the best thing out there for it's class!
Awesome!, May 23, 2012 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Penn Fathom Star Drag Conventional Baitcast Reel (Sports) Love my new Fathom! Great for basically any California fishing other than Tuna, Marlin, and shark. Can't wait to try throwing irons for barracuda with this, it should work great!
