However, if you are proficient you can "cast this one a mile" as they say. Excellent drag. Brake seems to be okay. No trouble landing the fish so far as it is a very smooth reel. For fishing where you have to cast to get to them, this reel is amazing. I don't use it much fishing from the bank or farm ponds because believe me if you grab some grass or a limb during your cast you will be picking birds nests for a while.It is a free spool with no magnetic control. From a boat or clear area it is outstanding. Can you tell I really like this reel?

It seems to be built like a tank. It's a little bigger and heavier than most low profile reels, but still palms good. It's best suited on a larger rod for a good match. I'm glad it's made in the U.S., however the fit of the side cover and front cover could be better and is not on par with a reel in this price range. The reel is very smooth retrieving and casting, working well mechanically. This model casts so freely that you may have to use more braking than you're accustomed to in order to prevent backlashes. I give it only 4 stars because of the exterior cosmetic fit and it's sort of oversized for it's line capacity. I understand Ardent has dropped this and other models in favor of a whole new design.
